Guest Post – An Oily Life

Hi there!

This post is coming to you from a newbie in the blogger realm. My name is McKenna and I am Tianna’s soon-to-be sister-in-law (that’s a mouthful)!

Tianna thoughtfully asked if I would be interested in writing to you guys about a subject that I am very passionate about, so here I am!

Before I dive in, I’d like to give you a little background about myself. I am currently a senior at The Ohio State University, graduating in May with my Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Merchandising. I love being outdoors, traveling to new places, reading books, shopping, and most importantly, spending time with the people I love.

This past summer, I was given the opportunity to travel to Duluth, Minnesota, where I interned as a Business Analyst – Merchandiser (sounds fancy, but it’s really not). While I was there, I had a lot of free time on the weeknights and the weekends, so I decided to start my own oily business through Young Living (yes, I am one of those “crazy oil ladies”). You may or may not have heard of this company, but they are a multi-level marketing (MLM) company that has been around since 1994. I had purchased a “starter kit” through one of my friends back in November of 2016, which consists of a bunch of oils and a diffuser (things I didn’t know how to use at the time). I had absolutely NO intention of getting involved in the business side of the company – MLM, bugging my friends, inconsistent income – NO THANKS! However, I started using the oils a lot while I was in Minnesota, doing tons of research on uses and remedies and DIYs. I realized how incredible the oils were, which led to my interest in the business.

After doing A LOT of research on the company and the business, I realized that I had so many misconceptions about MLMs and realized how Young Living actually sets you up for crazy success! Since then, I’ve been passionately sharing about my love for essential oils and other Young Living (YL) products! If you’re not familiar with Young Living or oils, you may be wondering, “what is this girl even talking about?” Let me give you the run down.

Most of us don’t realize that we use essential oils a lot in our everyday lives – they’re found in food, toothpaste, mouthwash, perfumes, skincare products, etc. But not all oils are created equally. Oils found in food and cosmetics are typically synthetic unless stated otherwise. When you apply or ingest a synthetic oil, your body processes it as a toxin, and it therefore becomes harder to break down, or can be stored in fat cells.

Young Living Essential Oils are therapeutic grade, which gives them the ability to work with your body, not against it. Within 20 minutes of applying oils, they can be found in EVERY cell in your body! These pure oils are distilled from the “life blood” of plants and contain the plant’s own immunity, hormones, and scents. When you pick a rose and break off the stem, you’ll always notice there is a bit of watery substance. This is the source that the pure essential oils come from.

You can use essential oils in 3 specific ways – aromatically, topically, and internally. I use all of these methods, but it does depend on which oil I am using and the effect I am wanting. I, personally, have seen success using essential oils as support for sleep, stress, head tension, sore muscles, skin, healthy immune function, snoring, seasonal stuffiness, weight management, emotional support, household cleaning/cooking and a whole slew of other things. I love knowing that there is nothing more natural and that they don’t come with horrible side effects and long-term dangers like many other toxic options that are sold in stores. You can use them to make creams and sprays (hand purifying sprays, bug sprays, sleep sprays, ouch creams, stress creams… you name it) which make them just as convenient as using what we were already using. The best way to get started (how I got started) is to get the Premium Starter Kit with the 11 most popular oils and a diffuser (you can pick your very own diffuser)!

The community is probably the best part about this company. You will never get a kit and not know what the heck to do with it. We provide you with the resources you need to get the most use of your starter kit, and you NEVER have to do the business if you don’t want to (but I have a feeling that you probably will)!

Thank you for being patient with me as I babbled about all the oily things. Feel free to follow my oily instagram account, @soul.essentials, where I do most of my sharing. You can email me at mjmerkle1@gmail.com with any questions you might have about oils or the business!

McKenna
